What is sod removal and how should you tackle it?

Summer has arrived, meaning many will venture outside to enjoy green spaces, whether it’s community fields, residential areas, golf courses or football pitches. But, along with heavy use, the harsh sun can often put turf under a lot of strain, leaving it stressed, scorched and crying out for some TLC. There are a number of things you can do to revive damaged areas of grass, but in some cases, it can be beyond repair, so will need replacing to restore it back to health. This is a process often referred to as sod removal.

Sod removal is usually a very simple task, but there’s a few things you need to remember to ensure turf is extracted properly to ensure a seamless finish.

We’ve put together a few top tips so you can tackle sod removal with ease!

Dig up the dirt

It may seem like a simple job, but when removing turf – otherwise known as sod – it should be removed along with a thin layer of soil. This is to make sure that the surface below is level, so the new turf being laid in its place can seamlessly fit alongside the existing grass.

Hydration is key

Before removing turf, it’s important to prepare the soil by watering the area thoroughly a few days before. This will mean that as the soil starts to dry out, it should be moist enough to be removed with the grass without falling apart. Removing turf when the soil is still wet will not only make it harder to cut through it, due to its dense nature, but it will make transporting the sod a lot more strenuous. You can either use a hose or a sprinkler to prepare the turf, but it’s important to make sure that the water distribution is even so the area dries out at the same time.

Avoid back-breaking work

You can remove sod with hand tools, such as a shovel, but it can be tiresome and back-breaking work, so we recommend using a powered sod cutter, like our SC18 Series Hydrostatic Drive Sod Cutter to make light work of extraction, particularly in larger areas.

The SC18 Series is the perfect companion for sod removal thanks to its powerful Honda engine and robust drive and cut system. Its variable speed hydrostatic transmission allows you to match the cutting speed to the ground condition you’re dealing with and its specially designed wheels create a softer touch, meaning the surrounding grass will remain in good condition!

That’s not all! The SC18 also come equipped with a rear cater wheel for curved cuts while its locks allow for straight cutting, making it an invaluable tool for cutting irrigation channels, landscapes and sports fields – especially golf courses. Plus, its handle isolation mounts absorb all of the vibration, making use smooth and fatigue-free!
