Revive your garden after winter

2018 was a tough year for our gardens and it seems like they haven’t fully recovered from the extreme weather conditions we faced last year. It’s time to try and rejuvenate our lawns and gardens in prep for spring!

Aerate

Before you plan to see your lawn the first task you must do is to aerate your lawn. For the best combination of productivity, operator comfort, superior aeration results, variable hole density and remarkably low maintenance in its class, consider our PL2500SPH 25″ / 64cm Hydro-Drive aerator. The unit can aerate up to 4.000m2 per hour.

Repair the patches

If your lawn has patches it might be time to reseed which will bring the lawn back to life in the next couple of months. Billy’s Goat Series Push Overseeder conserves seed with Billy Goat’s exclusive Auto Drop feature by automatically starting or stopping seed drop with bale engagement. Capable of covering 13,000sq.ft/hr, this machine will make light work of any turf space!

Lawncare

The frost can really damage the lawn and the build-up of thatch can restrict light, air and moisture from reaching the roots.

Scarifying is very beneficial lawn treatment which is most effective when done ‘little and often’, rather than when a thatch problem has been allowed to become troublesome.

Billy Goat’s range of petrol powered lawn scarifiers manoeuvre effortlessly around both small and larger properties, removing matted thatch from any type of turf. The Billy Goat Power Rake (Scarifier), with its rugged design, can withstand the most demanding use. The PR’s flails propel the machine forwards, making it self-propelled and minimizing fatigue for the user.

B2

General maintenance

Trying to keep a post-winter garden clear can be a relentless task with weekly raking to keep fallen leaves at bay. Leaf vacuums offer a powerful solution and can gather leaves in moments.

To tackle a big job like this, Billy Goat’s range of lawn and leaf vacuums are available for use in residential gardens, as well as any and all large-scale industrial, commercial and municipal clean-up projects. Self-propelled and designed for use on hard and soft surfaces, Billy Goat’s machines can pick up debris ranging from bottles, litter, branches and leaves.

Seasons bleating’s from Billy Goat

Winter can be a tricky time for gardeners. Clearing grounds and estates can be a mammoth task during the colder months, with extreme ice and snow on the horizon. The cold can take its toll on both user and machine.

If your garden equipment has seen better days, maybe it’s time to treat yourself, or any hard working gardener you know.

During winter, leaf covered paths can turn into dangerously slippery ice rinks. The Billy Goat F6 blower, £670 inc. VAT is ideal for clearing paths and will come in handy for 2015 spring cleaning. The F6 push bower is lightweight, yet powerful with its patented Aim N Shoot™ technology, directing airflow to where you need it most.

Easy to manoeuvre, the self-propelled blower also carries the option of adding a caster wheel kit for extra mobility. Not only is removing leaf debris advisable for safety, removing it from lawns is essential to prevent the spread of disease and help make sure grounds look their best in 2015.

A range of accessories are available throughout the entire range including mulch kits, slicing blade, seed boxes and dust covers to name a few. Starting at £28.00, Billy Goat accessories are the perfect accoutrement to larger items in the range.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for all at Billy Goat!

What to do with leftover leaves

Billy Goat2During an autumn garden clean up, it’s easy to get stuck with huge pile of leaves and garden debris. Rather than throwing them in the wheelie bin, why not harness the leafy goodness and make a nutritious compost for free! Leafmould!

Leafmould is an excellent soil conditioner. It can also be added to homemade compost or well-rotted manure in order to create a nourishing mulch, ideal for improving soil structure.

The fallen leaves are broken down by fungi which work their way through the leaves’ structure, slowing breaking them down. It is best to compost the leafmould separately as the leaves rot down slower than normal compost waste.

All leaves and conifer needles can be used and will eventually break down into leafmould. Some leaves, such as oak, beech or hornbeam, break down quickly and produce an excellent result, but thicker leaves such as holly and laurel will need shredding to help speed up the process of decomposing.

Conifer needles will eventually break down, but can take two to three years to decay so it’s better to add those to the normal compost heap.

Leaves can be collected and placed in a pen made from chicken wire and a few posts. If DIY is not your forte the easier option is to put the leaves in a bin bag with some air holes added to let the air circulate. Place it in a corner and just forget about it for a year, and you will return to a bag of gardening gold.

Once you have a magnificent leafmould pile, before you plunge that fork in and start spreading, be aware of any sheltering wildlife. Mounds often attract toads and slow worms so just give them some time to move on before you uproot them.

For clearing leaves from larger gardens it is best to invest in a vacuum. Billy Goat’s Little Billy LB352 is particularly light and manoeuvrable and features superior suction. The unit is ideal for vacuuming leaves and grass cuttings that can then be added to the compost heap with ease.

The Billy Goat range also includes a selection of push and self-propelled vacuums, as well as force blowers to make collecting leaves even easier.

Billy Goat clears up the drive

Billy Goat clears up the drive

A small woodland that had been felled and replanted can create the perfect conditions for dense undergrowth and can quickly become a massive challenge for beaters and dogs on any shoot.

To help face this challenge, our Billy Goat ground-clearing machines recently attended the White Hart Cover on Staffordshire’s Seighford pheasant syndicate to tackle its undergrowth.

The Billy Goat Outback Hydrostatic brushcutter cut a 26” wide swathe through undergrowth that, in places, is waist high and a mix of bramble, grasses, weed and unwanted self-sown saplings up to 5cm wide. It also easily coped with overgrown brush up to 2m high.

In just two hours the walk-behind machine cleared drives and spaces for feeders and achieved what would take a work-party of half a dozen guns and beaters a morning’s hard slog.

“The ground was virtually impenetrable but as soon as we fired up the machine and moved into the area it became immediately apparent that this was an incredibly powerful piece of equipment,” said Simon Keeling, the game keeper at Seighford.

“It simply cut through everything in its patch, never got stuck and when facing huge growths of bramble, we simply tilted the handled back to lift the front of the Billy Goat and lowered it down to remove everything to ground level,” he added.

The machine is fully automatic and its hydrostatic transaxle senses when the rear wheels start to spin it locks the wheels to give positive traction.  Its heavy-duty blade spindle is reinforced on four sides to tackle any brush conditions.

Billy Goat brushcutter prices start from £2249.99 including VAT.
